Summary

New York Times bestselling author Francine Rivers returns to the California frontier in this sweeping, romantic tale of a displaced New England suffragette, a former Union soldier disinherited by his Southern family, and the town they join forces to save。

1875。 When Kathryn Walsh arrives in tiny Calvada, a mining town nestled in the Sierra Nevadas, falling in love is the farthest thing from her mind。 Banished from Boston by her wealthy stepfather, she has come to claim an inheritance from the uncle she never knew: a defunct newspaper office on a main street overflowing with brothels and saloons, and a seemingly worthless mine。 Moved by the oppression of the local miners and their families, Kathryn decides to relaunch her uncle's newspaper--and then finds herself in the middle of a maelstrom, pitted against Calvada's most powerful men。 But Kathryn intends to continue to say--and publish--whatever she pleases, especially when she knows she's right。

Matthias Beck, owner of a local saloon and hotel, has a special interest in the new lady in town。 He instantly recognizes C。 T。 Walsh's same tenacity in the beautiful and outspoken redhead--and knows all too well how dangerous that family trait can be。 While Kathryn may be right about Calvada's problems, her righteousness could also get her killed。 But when the handsome hotelier keeps finding himself on the same side of the issues as the opinionated Miss Walsh, Matthias's restless search for purpose becomes all about answering the call of his heart。

Everyone may be looking to strike it rich in this lawless boomtown, but it's a love more precious than gold that will ultimately save them all。

Enjoyable。 Easy read。 A woman making a big difference!

I am usually a fan of Francine Rivers…。although a good read I didn’t think it was up to her usual writing!

A wonderful, ambiguous title。 "The Lady Is Mine" (both the hero and the villain say) or "The Lady Owns a Mine" (the heroine says)。An historical romance, set in the late gold rush in Califonia's Sierra Nevada mountains。 This romance is well done with the classic "I'm never getting married" heroine and an "I'm going to marry her" hero。There are dozens of hard-drinking men, women who sell what the men might want, one very despicable villain, two loyal lady friends and a lovable, protective dog。 Thr A wonderful, ambiguous title。 "The Lady Is Mine" (both the hero and the villain say) or "The Lady Owns a Mine" (the heroine says)。An historical romance, set in the late gold rush in Califonia's Sierra Nevada mountains。 This romance is well done with the classic "I'm never getting married" heroine and an "I'm going to marry her" hero。There are dozens of hard-drinking men, women who sell what the men might want, one very despicable villain, two loyal lady friends and a lovable, protective dog。 Throughout we learn how unfair the woman's position is。 (We Yanks took our British parent's legal system: what's his belongs to him, and, on marriage, what was hers belongs to him。 Voting, and politics are men's concerns。) Our heroine rebels。 Fortunately for her (and us!) she has decided to tame her worst feminist impulses to settle on what she can achieve。 Fortunately (for the plot) her judgment is bad。There is enough religion to threaten the story。 A good thing if you read from the Christian Bible, but too much of this good thing if you don't。 。。。more

This was an enjoyable read, but not as good as Rivers usually is, imo。 This one was less overtly christian and more of a "good clean romance。" I usually like her books because of the faith journey of the characters and the way she doesn't just make the characters "go to church so it's a christian genre", but she didn't do that this time。 I was also a little surprised at the focus on women's rights。 That said, it's still Francine Rivers, so I enjoy her writing and characterization。 Just a quick, This was an enjoyable read, but not as good as Rivers usually is, imo。 This one was less overtly christian and more of a "good clean romance。" I usually like her books because of the faith journey of the characters and the way she doesn't just make the characters "go to church so it's a christian genre", but she didn't do that this time。 I was also a little surprised at the focus on women's rights。 That said, it's still Francine Rivers, so I enjoy her writing and characterization。 Just a quick, escapist read this time。 。。。more

This was exactly what I needed in the moment。 The novel follows the formula of a Christian, western romance with a spunky heroine and a leading man with just a bit of the rogue in his character。 Sparks fly, they drive each other crazy, and fall in love。 It was a super easy read that kept me turning the pages and put a smile on my face。 Sometimes, that's all a reader wants。I did love that the lead characters cared about their community and showed it by rolling up their sleeves and doing the work。 This was exactly what I needed in the moment。 The novel follows the formula of a Christian, western romance with a spunky heroine and a leading man with just a bit of the rogue in his character。 Sparks fly, they drive each other crazy, and fall in love。 It was a super easy read that kept me turning the pages and put a smile on my face。 Sometimes, that's all a reader wants。I did love that the lead characters cared about their community and showed it by rolling up their sleeves and doing the work。 Would that we could all have that kind of impact on our communities。 。。。more

This is the first book by Francine Rivers I have read。 Absolutely loved it! She knows how to show her readers the inner chambers of the hearts of her characters while adding many great layers to the plot。 This is truly a page-turner!

Not as fantastic as some of her other reads but was still enjoyable。

2。75。。。This feels like it was written in the early 90s。 Kathryn is annoyingly stubborn and makes stupid choices。 She and Beck are constantly at each other's throats。 It didn't feel like romance to me, more like a couple headed for divorce。 This doesn't live up to the Mark of the Lion trilogy, or Redeeming Love。 2。75。。。This feels like it was written in the early 90s。 Kathryn is annoyingly stubborn and makes stupid choices。 She and Beck are constantly at each other's throats。 It didn't feel like romance to me, more like a couple headed for divorce。 This doesn't live up to the Mark of the Lion trilogy, or Redeeming Love。 。。。more

Very underwhelmed with this book。 The heroine gets herself repeatedly into foolish situations and several times I wanted to pitch the book when she compromises her safety and prudishly responds - But onward our naive beautiful heroine continues! I normally love River's writing and the depth of her stories but this felt like it may have been penned by a ghost writer。 Very harlequin romance feel and so far below the author's normal style。 Very underwhelmed with this book。 The heroine gets herself repeatedly into foolish situations and several times I wanted to pitch the book when she compromises her safety and prudishly responds - But onward our naive beautiful heroine continues! Not as enthralling as some of her others but still really enjoyed it。 While I was reading it it held my attention but I didn't constantly want to read it。 Francine always provides a good, godly story with characters to remember。 I definitely recommend if u are looking for something wholesome and uplifting。 Not as enthralling as some of her others but still really enjoyed it。 While I was reading it it held my attention but I didn't constantly want to read it。 Francine always provides a good, godly story with characters to remember。 I definitely recommend if u are looking for something wholesome and uplifting。 。。。more

I admit I was hesitant to begin this book。 I wouldn’t call myself a “fan” of Francine Rivers exactly。 I found her Redeeming Love nearly too raw and had some issues with it。 I read The Masterpiece and didn’t like it at all。 Too weird。 But I decided to try The Lady’s Mine all the same。 Thankfully it ended up being more like the “three bears” situation。 And the book was “just right”。 😬It was FAR more on par with other historical fiction in this genre。 It was a very interesting story that just when I admit I was hesitant to begin this book。 I wouldn’t call myself a “fan” of Francine Rivers exactly。 I found her Redeeming Love nearly too raw and had some issues with it。 I read The Masterpiece and didn’t like it at all。 Too weird。 But I decided to try The Lady’s Mine all the same。 Thankfully it ended up being more like the “three bears” situation。 And the book was “just right”。 😬It was FAR more on par with other historical fiction in this genre。 It was a very interesting story that just when you thought something was wrapped up, you remembered there were still many chapters left and something else happens。I wrote down a few quotes to remember, and by far the most memorable one was…“I’m not giving up on God because of what one man said from the pulpit。” How many people have thrown out religion because of what someone in authority said? Yes, they claim to speak on behalf of God, but so did the false prophets in the Bible。 😏I believe a pervasive message of the book, was not allowing what other people say, define you as truth。⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Solid 4 stars! 。。。more

Good but Not OriginalThis was a good book, don’t get me wrong。 I LOVE Francine Rivers and have read all of her books。 If you have seen “When Calls the Heart,” you have pretty much read this book。 There are some differences (jobs, names, etc。), but the overall theme and plot line was the same。 That was quite disappointing。 If you haven’t seen the show, this would be a great, easy read。
